More than 100 archaeologists, professional and amateur, and rock art enthusiasts from as far away as Canada gathered in the hot desert sun in April, 1997, on a high knoll overlooking the rocky canyons bordering the Pecos River. Here the dramatic white limestone carving -- the 14-foot tall White Shaman statue known as "Enduring Spirit"-- was the center of attention.
The Rock Art Foundation (RAF) commissioned Kerrville artist and RAF member Dean Mitchell to sculpt a 14-foot tall limestone summer solstice marker as an expression of his regard for the ancient people of the Lower Pecos River region and the ongoing work of the RAF. This sculpture was placed in April 1997 on top of a knoll in the Galloway White Shaman Preserve. Aligned to the summer solstice, the marker incorporates both the form of the White Shaman pictograph and the cyclical rhythm of the rising sun.
