Dean Mitchell worked every weekend, except those of Thanksgiving and Christmas, from September through March on the huge carving that celebrates the pictographs found on the walls and ceilings of the rock shelters in the deep canyons. T.R. Fehrenbach, author of "Lone Star,' a book that later became a Public Television mini-series of the same name, was principal speaker at the dedication ceremony. Also on the program was Solveig Turpin, Director of the University of Texas-Austin Borderland Archaeological Research Unit and one of the nation's authorities on Pecos River rock art. The limestone carving is astronomically aligned so that on June 21, the rising sun will completely light the carved opening, which outlines the White Shaman. The site of the statue is open to the public on weekends and is about 40 miles west of Del Rio, about one mile off U.S. 90. For information call the Rock Art Foundation at 1-888-ROCKART. |
