Dr. Solveig A. Turpin is a recognized authority on the rock art of the Lower Pecos Region. She has picked up the torch of a passion for the rock art of Texas Indians carried so capably by W.W. Newcomb and A.T. Jackson in the 1930's. Since receiving her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Texas in 1982, she has not only tirelessly labored to discover and document sites, but also to unravel the meaning of these great paintings. Her exhaustive research and practical field experience have given her unique insights into the hunter-gather lifeways of the Lower Pecos people and the probable shamanic origins of these paintings. |
