| This painting was named the Red Elk, although there is no archeological evidence that elk ever lived in the Lower Pecos region. The Red Monochrome artists were widely traveled and may have brought this image with them from the west, or it may be a very elaborate portrait of a deer. The painting is superimposed on faded Pecos River style shamans. Deep scratches were probably inflicted on the image prehistorically as part of rituals intended to capture the power of the painting. |
