| This horned apparition from the Pecos River is apparently shown in profile, holding a miniature two-legged figure as though preparing to devour it. A similar construct on the Devils River is shown frontally, with two rounded protrusions like pincers that arch inward above its head. It is possible that this scene illustrates a shamanic initiation where the novitiate is devoured or torn apart by malignant spirits, only to be reconstituted as a shaman. |
